We over here at Best for Kodi have decided to do a complete new section, this one is going to look at Kodi skinning, we are going to help you learn about how to change a few thing on the skins, we will do this by using kodi texture tool, notepad++, a picture editing tool.

But before we start and go in to the nitty gritty, I think its best to give some definition to how kodi stores the images used.

kodi uses .png image files and compresses them using the kodi texture tool, this is done so kodi can load the images quicker, and uses less space on the device.

All skins use the .xbt files and all use the textures.xbt file as the main one, you can create different ones if you wish, i.e if you change the feel of the skin to a red colour you can save the file as red.xbt, and then you can select that from the themes section in skin settings.

So lets have a look at the kodi textures tool

The texture tool can be downloaded from Here, then once down loaded and loaded on to pc/laptop and run you’ll be presented with the following:

by using this you can uncompress the images that you can edit, follow the steps below to extract the textures file.

1. Select your input file in the FileopenDialog Window, location  will be, C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Roaming\Kodi\addons\skin.aeon.nox.5\media

2. Select the output directory, you need to create a file on desk top for this, I generally call it textures,

3. Press the “start” button to begin, then once the process is complete you’ll get the unpacked files

it is the opposite route when you have finished.

1. Select your input directory in the FileopenDialog Window
2. Select the output .xbt file (for example “Textures.xbt”)
3. Press the “start” button to begin.

so that’s a look at the textures tool, in my next blog i’ll look at other parts of the process
